Free things to do in Dubai

Dubai has a reputation for luxury, but some of its best experiences cost nothing at all, or just a few dirhams.

  • Watch the Dubai Fountain in Downtown: shows every evening on the lake beside the Burj Khalifa, with music and lights.
  • Swim at a public beach: JBR, Kite Beach and La Mer are free, with showers and lifeguards on many stretches.
  • Explore the Al Fahidi Historical District: the old wind-tower neighbourhood of Bur Dubai, with lanes, courtyards and small galleries.
  • Browse the souks: the Gold Souk and Spice Souk in Deira (looking is free; bargaining is expected if you buy).
  • Cross Dubai Creek by abra: not quite free, but only a few dirhams for one of the best views of the old city.
  • Walk the Dubai Marina promenade and see the yachts and towers, especially at sunset.
  • See the Burj Al Arab from the public beach next to Madinat Jumeirah.
  • Visit Expo City Dubai, where many outdoor areas are free to walk around.
  • Spot flamingos at the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary hides (cooler months).
  • Window-shop the mega malls: The Dubai Mall's aquarium tank and waterfall can be seen from the mall itself.

Rules and opening times can change; check official sources for beaches and heritage sites before you go.
